Week 5 Tools For Life

Week 5 Tools For Life- Calming Down

Dear Parents/ Guardians:

This week, your child learned strategies to calm down when they are upset. Demonstrating self control is a very important life skill that all children will need to be successful. We have been encouraging your child to share their feelings, but they need to know appropriate strategies to do this.

Please take this opportunity to discuss what your child learned using the following questions. We are sure that you will be impressed with the many strategies they have learned. Encourage them to use these strategies at home as well as school.

  1. What causes you to get upset and need to calm down?
  2. What are some ways that you like to calm down?
  3. Share with your child, times that you get upset and need to calm down.
  4. Share with your child, ways that you calm down.

Sincerely,

Mr. Shanahan & Ms. Murphy

Week 4 Tools for Life

Week 4 Tools for Life- Body Clues

Dear Parents/ Guardians:

This week your child learned about body clues for feelings. A person’s body language sends very clear messages as to how they are feeling. It is important that children learn how to read and understand body clues in themselves and other people. If a child can recognize body clues in themselves, they can start to learn strategies to maintain self control and make good choices. If they can learn to recognize other people’s body clues, it will help them to make choices to change something they are doing to someone who is upset, or to avoid someone who may need some time alone. It will also assist them in developing empathy for others, which will make them better friends

Please take this opportunity to discuss what your child learned using the following questions. We are sure that you will be amazed with what they are learning and how much they know.

  1. When you are excited, where do you feel it in your body?
  2. Ask your child to share how they recognize when you are frustrated?
  3. Share with your child a body clue you get when you are sad.
  4. How do you know when you are feeling angry?

Sincerely,

Mr. Shanahan & Ms. Murphy

Week 3 Tools for Life – Put Ups

Dear Parents/ Guardians:

This week, your child learned about positive ways to speak to each other. The messages we send to others need to have a positive tone. We call these messages “Put Ups”. Put Ups are things we do or say to make others feel good. Please take this opportunity to discuss what your child learned through the following questions. We are sure that you will be impressed with how much information your child can share.

  1. What is a Put Up?
  2. What is a Put Down?
  3. Why is it important to give Put Ups?
  4. What are some things you could do or say that would be a put up?
  5. Show me how you can relax your muscles.

We hope that you will encourage your child to use the “Put Up” language at home, as well as at school.

Sincerely,

Mr. Shanahan & Ms. Murphy
