Progress reports

Please check your child’s backpack for their Progress Report (grades 1-8) and Initial Communication of Learning Report for Kindergarten students. We kindly ask you to read the accompanying letter which outlines next steps for completing the feedback portion of the report. This is important information for the upcoming Parent/ Student/ Teacher conferences this week. Also, please look for your child’s Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectation certificate. Every student has demonstrated personal growth and learning this school year, and we celebrate this through our Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations. We hope you will value this recognition with your child and proudly display the certificate in a meaningful place at home.

Conferences

We look forward to the opportunity to meet with parents/guardians on Thursday November 24th. If you are not able to meet on this day, you are encouraged to book a time for a phone call with the classroom teacher.

Conferences will be booked in 10 minute intervals and students are strongly encouraged to participate in the conference. Having their voice at the table is important for understanding their progress to date as well as developing next steps for improvement.

Spots will fill up quickly so be sure to book an appointment as soon as you can! We look forward to having conversations with as many students/parents/guardians as possible .

Please reach out to the teacher if you need alternate times or dates.

If you require the services of a translator please make sure you answer this question when you book the appointment. We will do our best to book a translator for your conference. It may be necessary to find an alternate conference as we will need to coordinate this around a number of additional schedules.

Grade 7 & 8 Homework Club

We are really excited to be offering a FREE Homework Club for our Grade 7 & 8 students every day during lunch at St. John’s. This is an opportunity for students to catch up on classwork, as well as receive additional support in math, reading, and writing. There will also be opportunities to engage in STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering & Math activities during this time.

We strongly encourage students to spend at least one or two lunches per week in Homework Club to receive support from teaches as we prepare to transition to secondary school. The Homework Club will be run by our Intermediate teachers, Ms. Stephens, Ms. Dawson, and Mr. Kapron, as well as Mrs. Simoes who also teaches at St. John’s. We are so grateful for their support in running Homework Club.

Please look for a letter in your Grade 7 or 8 child’s Progress Report envelope with more information today.

It is critical that all bus families are signed up for email notifications regarding bus delays with Student Transportation Services (STSWR). Please know that we have absolutely no control over transportation issues and we receive the same delay notifications that parents/ guardians receive through this notification service.

Many students signed out Chromebooks in the event of continued CUPE labour disruption. These devices need to be returned to the school as soon as possible now that we are back in school. If your child does not return the device and the power cord they will not be able to participate fully in learning that requires the use of an electronic device. We really need to have all of these devices and power cords returned to St. John’s as they are used in the classrooms every day.

Hello St. John’s families,

This is a quick reminder that Friday November 18th is our board wide Spiritual Development Day. This means there is no school for students and the school will be closed. On this day, staff are engaged in spiritual activities as a staff; this is a very important day for our staff community development.

This means we will not be answering the telephone or the front door on Friday November 18th. Please do not come to the school to request a Chromebook on Friday November 18th. IF schools are closed on Monday due to labour disruption we will notify families regarding next steps at the end of the weekend. We will not have any information prior to this time.

We continue to pray for a respectful resolution to the labour unrest across the province. Please stay tuned for more information at the end of the weekend.

Important Update on Potential CUPE Strike

Message from Waterloo Catholic DSB…

On Monday, November 14, 2022, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH), Dr. Kieran Moore, shared information with Ontarians concerning the rise of cases of influenza, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)  and COVID-19 across the province.

Dr. Moore has strongly recommended that Ontarians use the protective strategies available to them, including wearing masks indoors.

There is no provincial mask mandate.

Even prior to the onset of COVID-19 in March 2020, it has been the practice of Waterloo Region’s Catholic schools to follow the guidance of the Chief Medical Officer — as well as that of our own Region of Waterloo Public Health officials — when it comes to dealing with communicable diseases in schools.

While masking is not mandated, our schools are now, and will remain, mask-friendly spaces, and we encourage students and staff to wear masks indoors during the rise in cases we are currently experiencing.

The decision to wear a mask remains a personal choice. However, as Dr. Moore notes, it is a way to support partners in our health care system as they respond to an increase in pressures caused by the current increase in respiratory illnesses in our communities.

As we move into the winter months, please keep in mind:

• Parents, students, and staff are reminded to stay home if feeling unwell and only return when symptoms are improving for at least 24 hours (48 hours if you are experiencing nausea, vomiting, or have diarrhea). Those recovering from illness or with symptoms should continue to mask for ten days from onset of symptoms. Please review the daily Ontario School Screening Tool for common symptoms and specific guidance when responding to your individual circumstances. https://www.ontario.ca/school-screening/
• Students and staff are encouraged to wear a mask when indoors – particularly when in close contact with others — to reduce the opportunity to spread respiratory illness. The decision to mask remains a personal choice, and all individuals will be afforded the same respect in our classrooms and workspaces.
• Staff will continue to have access to personal protective equipment at school.
• Masks continue to be available to all students upon request.
• Students and staff are asked to continue practicing good hand hygiene (e.g., hand washing, sanitizing) and be sure to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing (e.g., cough/sneeze into your elbow).
• Dr. Moore has also suggested that Ontarians consider getting their flu shot and COVID vaccine / booster.

As a result of this morning’s announcement by the Premier that the Ontario government will rescind Bill 28 and will return to collective bargaining with the Canadian Public Sector Employees Union – Ontario — (CUPE), education workers represented by CUPE have agreed to pause their job action and return to schools effective tomorrow – Tuesday, November 8, 2022.

This means all WCDSB schools (including St. Louis) will be open on November 8 for a regular day of classes.

All school transportation will be running as regularly scheduled.

All WCDSB extended day programs will be running on their regular schedules.

We thank you for your patience and understanding as we transitioned into remote learning, and we pray that both sides will quickly reach a fair and just collective agreement that serves the interests of all.

All Chromebooks need to be returned to the school with your child on Tuesday November 8th, 2022.
